I don't know if it's a "must have" for the pax 3, but it definitely increases the vaporizer's user comfort a bit. Resistance when pulling is slightly lower, clouds are a bit larger, and that's probably what it was about. The sieve is well made, easy to clean, doesn't get stuck in the heating chamber (it falls out loosely so you need to be careful not to lose it).
