In recent years, we are observing a significant breakthrough in the issue of marijuana legalization around the world. Many countries have taken steps towards legalizing its use, both recreational and medical. In Poland, although still in the development phase, varieties of medical marijuana have found their place in medicine. On the other hand, in other regions of the world, the legalization of medical marijuana takes place at various levels, from full legalization to more restrictive regulations.

Some countries introduce strict limits on THC content, while others allow higher concentrations of this compound, but in a controlled manner. In the case of hemp legalization, it is also important to regulate the issues of cultivation, sales and use, to prevent abuse and ensure public safety.

In Canada and many US states, such as California or Colorado, marijuana has been legalized for both recreational and medical purposes. In other countries, such as Uruguay, comprehensive legislation has also been introduced allowing legal sale and use of this plant.

However, even where marijuana is legal, differences in regulations concerning cultivation, distribution and use can be significant. For example, some countries allow only medical marijuana, restricting its availability only to patients with specific conditions, while others enable its sale in specially licensed stores.

Where in Europe is marijuana legal?

In Europe, marijuana legalization is also becoming increasingly visible, although this process differs depending on the country. For example in the Netherlands, although marijuana for recreational use is still illegal, tolerance is applied towards cafes (so-called coffeshops), where you can buy and consume small amounts (up to 5g) of marijuana and hashish.

In the Czech Republic, the law allows possession of up to 15 grams of dried cannabis or cultivation of up to five plants for personal use, although we can expect updates to Czech laws soon, as they aim to fully legalize marijuana. Significant changes are being prepared in Germany, where since 2017 patients can receive prescriptions for various types of medical marijuana, which are legally available in pharmacies, often containing high concentrations of CBD, with minimal amounts of THC or vice versa. Recently, Germany legalized marijuana for personal – recreational use, although its purchase will be difficult, as it will only be available in cannabis clubs. Similar regulations regarding marijuana for recreational use also apply in other European countries, such as Portugal, Switzerland, and Spain. However, medical marijuana is legal in most European countries, including those mentioned above.

In which states is marijuana legal?

In the United States, marijuana legalization has also evolved in recent years. Currently, dozens of states have legalized marijuana for recreational purposes, which has opened the market for numerous companies producing products containing various cannabinoids.

For example, in the state of California, where marijuana has been legal since 2018, there is a huge market for cannabis-related products, ranging from traditional flowers to food, beverages, and cosmetics enriched with cannabinoids. In total, as many as 24 out of 50 states, including Alaska, Michigan, Oregon, New York, and Virginia, have legalized marijuana for recreational use. Due to federal law prevailing in the USA, each of them has introduced its own regulations concerning the cultivation, distribution, and use of this plant.

Public awareness about marijuana legalization is slowly but clearly moving along the path of maturity. Where it is legalized, a new perspective emerges on health, social, and legal issues.
