A good grinder lets you break down any material quickly, evenly and comfortably.
In this category you will find grinders and crushers that differ in size, build material, number of parts and the consistency of herb you end up with after grinding. Which one should you pick? It depends mostly on how often you plan to use it, what final consistency you are after and whether you want an extra chamber for separating kief (pollen).

Which dry herb grinder should you choose?

A grinder should break the herb down evenly and let you transfer the material into the vaporizer chamber without a mess. In practice it is not only the grinding result that counts, but also how durable the build is, how safe the materials used are and how comfortable the crusher is in everyday use.

For occasional use

If you reach for your vaporizer only from time to time, a simple, small grinder that is easy to empty will most likely be enough: a complex design is neither necessary nor particularly useful in that case.

For regular vaping sessions

If you grind often, it pays to go for something sturdier that delivers the same result every time and lasts for years. A solid grinder makes preparing the herb much easier, and with daily use the difference in time and comfort becomes obvious very quickly.

If you want to separate and collect kief

In that case pick a four-part grinder with a screen and a separate bottom chamber. That is where kief collects: the fine dust that separates from the herb while grinding. It is worth keeping, because it is far more concentrated than the herb itself and you can, for example, add it to your next load to make the session stronger.

What to look at when choosing a grinder

The differences between grinders are bigger than they may seem at first glance. They affect both everyday handling and how well the herb is prepared for vaporization. What matters most in practice?

The consistency you want

A good grinder should break the herb down evenly, without leaving large chunks and without turning it into dust. That consistency makes filling the chamber easier, keeps airflow free and lets you use the whole load evenly.

Keep in mind that not every vaporizer works the same way with every grind size. Some models prefer a fine grind, others perform better with slightly larger pieces. That is why a grinder used for this purpose should above all deliver a predictable, repeatable result and a consistency that suits your particular vaporizer.

Number of parts and chamber layout

The simplest grinders have only two parts: both with teeth only, with no holes that would let the ground herb drop into a chamber inside the grinder. They are light, easy to use and work well when you want to grind a small amount quickly. In practice, though, this type calls for a herb tray you can tip the herb onto before loading the vaporizer.

Three-part models add a chamber that catches the ground material. Four-part grinders have one too, but its floor is a fine mesh screen through which kief is sifted into yet another chamber. That layout lets you separate the fractions and store them apart, but the grinder itself becomes bigger and needs more thorough cleaning.

Material and build quality

This mostly determines the look, the durability and how easy the grinder is to clean. Plastic and hemp plastic models are light and inexpensive, but they wear out, especially with frequent use. That can have unpleasant consequences with cheap plastic grinders in particular: after a while, tiny plastic particles may start ending up in the ground herb. This is why we have narrowed our range of such grinders down to genuinely safe models.

Aluminium grinders are far sturdier, heavier and handle denser herb better. Here too the grade of aluminium and the processes it went through (anodising, for instance) matter enormously for safe use. Despite being more durable than plastic, aluminium grinders can also wear down over time.

The highest quality comes from stainless steel grinders. They are noticeably heavier than aluminium ones and clearly the most expensive. In return they offer the greatest durability, teeth that stay sharp and safe long-term use. A steel grinder is very likely a purchase that will serve you for many years.

It is worth paying attention to the quality and shape of the teeth, threads and closure. A well-made grinder should turn without catching at all, have no sharp edges on the outside and no coating that could wear off over time. It should also give you a secure grip while grinding and use strong magnets that prevent it from opening accidentally.

Size and everyday comfort

Grinder size means both its height (which depends on how many parts it has) and, above all, its diameter. Small grinders fit easily in a pocket and work well for small amounts. Larger models are more comfortable, let you grind more at once and are usually a little easier to turn, which helps especially when the material is dense or sticky. A bigger grinder also stores more ground herb inside.

A well-chosen grinder should sit comfortably in your hand, not slip and let you tip the ground herb into the vaporizer chamber easily.

Ease of cleaning

Over time, herb particles and sticky resin build up inside a grinder, which can make turning harder and worsen the grind. The easiest models to clean are simple ones with few nooks and parts that come apart and empty out easily.

The material matters here too. Metal and plastic grinders are usually easier to clean thoroughly than wooden ones, which need gentler treatment. You can also slow the build-up down by regularly removing the plant pollen that gathers inside: grinders often come with a dedicated brush for exactly that.
